Contents

The collection records 282 lines of the Nanbu clan’s branches and 2,491 lines of retainer houses — about 2,700 houses in all. It shows the structure of the samurai society of a domain at the end of the Edo period. Genealogies of one house may be divided among several volumes: a study of the Nakazato family, for example, finds its entries in volumes 21, 52 and 80.

Notes on Related Works

A distinct work, Ōnan Kyūshiroku (奥南旧指録), records the successive heads of the Nanbu family and is a separate genealogical work held by the Iwase Bunko; it should not be confused with this collection.

Notes for Researchers

Because a house’s entries can appear in several volumes, use the index of the modern edition to gather them. Compare each line with other genealogies, temple records and family documents.
