A paper by Yuya Kinoshita, Director of our Institute, titled “A Preliminary Study on the Theoretical Framework for Genealogical Science (2): Supplementary Discussion on Disciplinary Purpose Theory,” has been published in La Généalogie (Keizu-Keifu Ronkyu), Volume 1, Number 2.

Abstract

Regarding the requirements of disciplinary objectives, all existing disciplinary theories either presuppose these requirements without demonstration or merely discuss the Disciplinary Object Theory; no study has established requirements for determining whether a given proposition qualifies as a disciplinary objective. Accordingly, this paper aims to establish the requirements of disciplinary objectives based on original insight rather than on inductive extraction from existing research. As a result of the examination, it is appropriate to interpret that a disciplinary objective satisfies the affirmative requirements of ① possessing intrinsic elements to a degree essential for distinguishing it from other academic fields (intrinsicality); ② prescribing matters that the academic field should realize proactively and actively (proactive and active realizability); and ③ delimiting the scope of research activities (scope determinacy), and that it satisfies the negative requirement of ④ not being an external effect, a wish or expectation toward third parties, a use for third parties, mere self-satisfaction of the researcher, or an objective of a subfield or of an individual specific research project. Furthermore, since the delimitation of the scope of research activities is substantively also the delimitation of the scope of research objects, the theory of Disciplinary Purpose Theory and the Disciplinary Object Theory are inseparably integrated.
